The End…or is it The Beginning?

I learned that the issue of Welsh language maintenance is much bigger than I thought. It incorporates nationalism, racism, elitism, and anti-globalizationism. The issue isn’t black and white. It’s a frustrating gray that I can’t decipher fully. My blog reflects as much as I think is true on the subject but with full knowledge that I don’t know everything or anything, really. There might not be a right or wrong answer to this, at least not one that we’ll ever arrive at. I think Welsh is worth preserving so long as it is useful. It’s history is something beautiful, and it’s future looks bright. The persecution it has endured in the past only hardens the resolve of its proponents, and I think the fact that the largest percentage of Welsh speakers are under the age of ten bodes well for the language’s future. I posted this piece of work in response to Matt’s Breaking News:

Dewi Sant, patron saint of Wales, once supposedly said, Gwnewch y pethau bychain. It means, Do the little things. This is a good example of this. Whenever a global issue involves children it hits me more. Children, the closest any of use get to innocence, ought to be spared the terrible consequences of stupid conflict Right? Sadly, wrong. The reality is awful harsh. I can’t imagine how people could lower themselves to abduct children. It just seems too cruel, but humanity always surprises with new lows. Oh well. I hope everyone’s alright. Goodnight. Goodbye.

I agree, first of all, in that I think that the need for an “other” is felt by many who seek to elevate themselves. Also, the opiate for the masses approach that you initially state concerning the elite seems common to me in many cultures. Hinduism appears to be allowed to exist because it enforces a kind of social Darwinism that suits their position. Unfortunately for the status quo, Christianity breaks down those barriers. I think you assessment of the situation is quite good, but who knows who’s right. Right? Right. Goodbye. Goodnight.

How Does One Take Action?

As this is my next step to complete, I’ve been thinking about it. I’m not sure individuals can change situations, despite what my Q book tells me. Maybe they can. Regardless, it’s difficult to assess because at the moment the issue lies with Wales and the U.K. I have a hard time explaining why anyone else should care. It’s really just a specific example of globalization and the reactions that different groups of people have to it. One the one hand, it has helped Welsh by incorporating it into new technological mediums, thus making it available to more people than ever before. On the other hand, Wales has had a large number of immigrants whose presence has threatened the Welsh language’s survival. Difficult to say what’s to be done.

Variety ensures a species’ survival, according to Darwinian theory. I don’t buy Darwin’s theory, but the world was given according to different kinds. Therefore, if globalization seeks to mitigate or do away with differences between cultures, then I think that’s going against the natural order. That part of it doesn’t seem right. The worthy aspect of globalization is its aim to bring the world into cooperation with itself. Unity is a noble goal, even though I doubt its ability to be realized on earth.

I have added a significant amount of information to my Background and Analysis. I would recommend reading it as it includes–in my opinion–one of the harshest stories of English oppression in recent history. I would also like to take this opportunity to say that I do not hate the English. It’s not right to hate anyone. It’s just that sometimes I am frustrated by them. One ought to help. Wales, England, and the whole world should ideally be united in mind and purpose. Unfortunately, this doesn’t always happen. Therein rises my frustration.

This morning I explicated an article commemorating the 25th anniversary of the advent of Welsh language television programming. There might not be anything so important to a language’s survival today as its ability to infiltrate the media. The information age requires people to be better informed. As such, if enough information is not available in one language to meet a person’s needs, that person will turn to other languages. Fortunately, Welsh has managed to find its way into the media through the sheer determination of its proponents. Good for Welsh!

Justifying “Small” Langauges

Owing to a recent comment I received, I want to offer another rebuttal in favor of the maintenance of minority languages. The commenter said that he believed that the world should be divided into as few linguistic and cultural groups as possible. I have two problems with that. First, if diversity is the spice of life and a good thing to have, then having fewer cultural and linguistic groups would be a detriment to the world community. Second, how does one decide which elements of which cultures get to be incorporated into the larger groups proposed? This is indeed a sensitive subject, and I don’t claim to know more than the next guy, but I really feel that no one culture is inherently superior to another and therefore neither has a right to exterminate the other. Admittedly, other forces are usually behind cultural decay. Again, I don’t know. It just doesn’t sit right with me to steamroll the smaller elements of the world community for the sake of homogeneity. It sounds synonymous with mediocrity.

I just added a new article to the Breaking News section that I think you will all enjoy. It discusses Welsh in music. The fact that there are performers willing to express themselves solely through Welsh bears testimony to the importance the language has in their lives. The poetry contained in this ancient tongue can hardly not evoke emotion in even non-speakers.
